Mentor Text New Year: A Christmas Leftover

REMINDER: Please mark your calendars for March On With Mentor Texts, coming this March, 2025! We can't wait to reveal the new logo and badges!

This week's post features a Christmas leftover. Why? A few reasons. First, as part of doing my due diligence when writing my latest WIP (a Christmas holiday / Santa themed book), I am logging and reading all the Christmas / Santa books I can get my hands on. The season of reading doesn't quite matter. But also, if the book is a library score, in some districts, it will go to storage after the holiday. So no time like the present to get my fill! But mostly because no matter the season, there's always something to be learned from reading any book!

Keep in mind -- this is a random post which I am writing while I am reading so it will be interesting to see the takeaways I can find / mine.

Well! It's quite apparent that this book is born of an idea that's fresh and new! How clever! It has me wishing that I had thought of it! And that's always a good sign. I'm sure the editor was intrigued from just the title and pitch. And some, like me, love sinking their teeth into a new epistolary picture book (written in letters).

I'll admit. I wavered back and forth throughout between loving, liking or not appreciating some particular poems for a variety of reasons. But that's what's great about this book - there's something for everyone! What may not appeal to me, will appeal to another! In that way, there may even be a broader audience for a book like this! Something to think about!

Overall, I thought the poems presented were extremely innovative and very funny. They came at the topic from so many angles and for so many age groups, it was impressive! In particular, it was also inspiring to see how many ways a creative mind might approach a letter to Santa. And now, take that inspiration (another wonderful by-product of a Mentor Text) and run with it. What clever letter to Santa can you (or your child) come up with?
