Lynne Marie Uncovers the Magic of Three In Goldilocks and the Three Bears

by Lynne Marie

I can't believe this is our very last post for the event. It was such a pleasure to come together for this learning experience and to see all the good that my Rate Your Story Judges and Friends had to share with you all. Congratulations to all who completed the challenge.

Let's celebrate with three cheers:

Hip, Hip, Hooray!

Which leads me to our final topic. As we close out the third month of the year, let’s discuss the magical concept of threes.

First, for fun, make a list of things that are effectively grouped in this manner. I will start you off. List your responses in the comment section of this post.

[Animal Fables]

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

[Art]

Three primary colors (Red, Yellow, Blue).

[Entertainment]

Three-ring circus.

[Fairy Tales]

Flora, Fauna and Merriweather (the fairies of Sleeping Beauty).

[History]

The Nina, the Pinta and the Santamaria (Columbus’ ships).

[Myth]

Cerberus’ heads (3-headed Dog that guards hell).

[Nursery Rhymes]

Rub a dub, dub. Three men in a tub.

The butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker.

[Poetry]

Three lines in a haiku.

[Psychology]

Id, Ego and Superego (Freud’s theory of personality).

[Religion]

The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost (the Trinity).

These are just a few that come to mind – I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Now let’s talk about why the magic of three works:

Three effectively shows a pattern (beginning, middle, end).

Three is the smallest number to create a rhythm (On your mark, get set, go!)

Three is funnier (the Three Stooges).

Three is satisfying (three act structure).

And four is just going too far. It breaks the spell.

The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears has been retold countless times. It effectively uses the magic of three in characters, objects, actions, and repetition.

But since there are so very many retellings, how would one write a version of this satisfying tale to sell today? The answer is easy. Fracture it!

I knew the tale was a popular one that would be told again and again, but by this point there were so many variations of the original and fractures. So I needed to find a door into the story that had not been opened before.

After reading all the Goldilocks retellings I could get my hands on, I realized there were goats, dinosaurs, pandas, martians, and more, but NO MONSTERS!

In my mind, Goldilocks and the Three Bears became Moldilocks and the Three Scares, and my tale was born!

Each and every book I read contributed to my story being new and different:

Goldi Rocks and the Three Bears by Corey Rosen Schwartz, Illustrated by Nate Wragg

Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Caralyn Buehner, Illustrated by Mark Buehner

Goldie and the Three Hares by Margie Palatini, Illustrated by Jack E. Davis

Goatilocks and the Three Bears by Erica S. Perl, Illustrated by Arthur Howard

and now of course, anyone wanting to rewrite this tale will need to check out my version:

Moldilocks and the Three Scares, illustrated by David Rodriguez Lorenzo
