MTM: CELEBRATING GRANDPARENTS with Lynne Marie
Posted Early for Mentor Text Monday
For many of us, children and adults alike, there are few things that are as wonderful or magical in the world as grandparents. There are many children’s picture books that celebrate this special relationship, so when writing on the topic be sure to find one from an angle that’s new and different and/or familiar and fresh.
Here are a few recent books that do just that.
A GRANDMA’S MAGIC by Charlotte Offsay
Illustrated by Asa Gilland
Doubleday Books, 2022
This sweet book captures the essence of those grandmothers that fill our hearts and memories. As an extra added bonus, it helpfully suggests a frame of mind to help cope when our grandmothers cannot be with us!
It features magical, playful language from Charlotte Offsay and equally magical and sweet illustrations by Asa Gilland. While there are many other books out there, it's easy to see why this one stood above the rest!
A wonderful gift to a grandchild or grandparent to celebrate their special relationship! Get your copy here: https://amzn.to/3RyLAW1 [#Ad]
AMAH FARAWAY by Margaret Chiu Greanias
Illustrated by Tracy Subisak
Bloomsbury, 2022
This touching story follows a girl on a trip to Taipei to see the Grandmother that she knows mostly from video calls to her home in Los Angeles.
In this story, visiting Amah is the conduit that really connects the main character Kylie to the home of her heritage, which she ultimately opens her heart to.
Not only can many children identify with having Grandparents in far away places that they don't see often, but they get to visit Taipei. Like the previous book, this inspires the child reader -- in this case to be present and open to unfamiliar experiences. It features a unique reverse format and can be read from top to bottom, and bottom to top and have two different tones and meetings.
The perfect gift for a grand child or grandparent who live faraway from each other. Get your copy here: https://amzn.to/3QIsnjO [#Ad]
BELLA'S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS by Ana Siqueira
Illustrated by Geraldine Rodriguez
Beaming Books, 2021
While this is surely Bella's story, her solution to her problem (of not succeeding in anything) is inspired by and assisted by her Abuela and their shared love for cooking, especially polverones.
This book features a universal problem, but weaves in hispanic culture and baking, and a tasty recipe at the end.
A sweet gift to commemorate Grandparent's Day for a grandchild and grandparent who share a love for baking. Get your copy here: https://amzn.to/3QA4afa [#Ad]
